Hey Ram - Cinema redefined
Hey Ram is a gem where the time and space of cinematic liberty are well defined and screen written. The film is written and directed by Kamal Hassan. This film is one of my favorite films of all time and it is strong enough to showcase the strength of how cinema is made through the scope of reality and history. Kamal Hassan handled the factor of alternate history with the thin line of balanced fiction and non-fiction narrative style in the form of cinema. It is the semi-fiction where the story evolves through the history of pre-Indian Independence. Every detail in the film counts and every aspect of the film gets to the relevant point when the story gets to its skin.
The details and the
hidden factors helped to elevate the film to the next level. I loved the film for
its screenplay and the way of film which has to be made. Kamal Hassan hoped
this film to be the best teacher of educating history in its right form but the
audience of the 2000s never took it so far, yet the film remains the most
influential film of all time in the history of Indian Cinema. I consider this
is the film for all Indians and for the world of people. Illaiyaraja composed
music for Hey Ram and it remains one of his best scores in his career.
Cinematographer Thirunavukarasu had done his portion of work very well which
showcase the true elements of cinematography in his unique way and also he made
the lightings to show the equal ratio of emotions conveyed through the frame.
Story and screenplay is the major key element for the film, with the proper screenplay and dialogues the film gets through its own flow of narration and has its own points of delivering the historical details. The unique characterization Saketh Ram drives the film in its own way. As the director, Kamal Hassan had made a film that keeps the audience in the path of deciding which one is right and which one is wrong. The motive of the protagonist in the film will keep the audience in the factor of an unbalanced state but towards the climax when the shade of Saketh Ram changes the perspective of the audience changes. The darkest exasperation in Saketh Ram will take control over him and the motive changes but finally, the overall theme of the film will be clearly conveyed with its own deciding factors. Kamal Hassan handled the character very well which gives its own shade and remains what it has to be.
The political
and religion-based contents were made a huge impact on the film where the
film deals with different aspects of problems in the society at the time of
British-India, particularly, Hindu-Muslim conflicts were well handled and he
marked the statements in his straight forward way when the character Amjad Ali
Khan says, “I am the son of Gandhi, I will stay here (India)”. To the end, when
Mahatma Gandhi asks Saketh Ram, “Do you think I am a Mahatma?”
Ram
says, “You will deny it if I say you are, so I shall deny you another denial
sir”.
